The running game with a stable of five-star backs would grind out 250 yards per game and squeeze the life out of a defense. Then quarterbacks would use play-action passes to hit big plays and salt away games. This season, however, Saban is utilizing a dynamic playmaker in quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the best-receiving corp in Crimson Tide history to develop an offensive juggernaut. Through mid-season No. 1 Alabama is averaging an astounding 553.2 yards and 54.2 points per game. After five games, Tagovailoa who holds the nation’s best quarterback rating at 238.2 and has yet to play in the fourth quarter. Let’s examine the positives and negatives of the first half of the 2018 season.Tagovailoa is a generational quarterback - Tagovailoa started against Louisville and put up video game numbers silencing the quarterback competition debate. Tagovailoa is a distributor hitting 8-10 receivers per game. The sophomore has completed 75 percent of his passes for 1,161 yards and 14 touchdowns with no interceptions. Earlier in the season, he completed 13 of 13 passes on third down. Tagovailoa’s ability to read defenses allows offensive coordinator Mike Locksley to open the playbook utilizing a deep, talented receiving corp. Five receivers account for over 200 yards in receptions led by Jerry Jeudy with 19 catches for 423 yards and six touchdowns. The secondary may be the biggest surprise - Xavier McKinney and Deionte Thompson may be the best safety combo in the SEC. Thompson leads the team in tackles with 27 and McKinney is third with 22. Both have two interceptions and two sacks. Saban’s 2017 gamble paid off moving Trevon Diggs to cornerback resulting in his emergence as a shutdown corner. Diggs’ interception against Louisiana means every member of the secondary has an interception at mid-season (Alabama is ranked second nationally with nine interceptions). Shyheim Carter primarily plays money but can play multiple positions. Patrick Surtain Jr. worked his way into the starting lineup against Texas A&M and sealed it with an NFL caliber interception.ALABAMA FOOTBALLAlabama Football at Midseason: Tua Tagovailoa Leads Offensive OnslaughtIsaiah Buggs leads a ferocious front seven - Defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs leads the Tide in sacks with 5.5 including three against Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond. Alabama recorded a season-high seven sacks (The Tide is third nationally with 18 sacks) against the Aggies, resulting in a key interception by Mac Wilson on the opening drive. Christian Miller recovered from last year’s torn bicep has tallied 16 tackles and 4.5 sacks and Dylan Moses is second with 24 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The kicking game is a mixed-bag - Freshman Skyler DeLong has the impossible task of replacing two-time Ray Guy Award finalist and current Green Bay Packer JK Scott. Through the Louisiana game, DeLong had punted 15 times for an average of 35.9 yards per attempt. Joseph Bulovas replaced Temple transfer, Austin Jones, after Jones had an extra-point meltdown in the Arkansas State game. After booting a 47-yard field goal in the Tide’s 22-point victory over Texas A&M, Bulovas missed two chip shot field goals (24 and 31-yard attempts) against Louisiana. The return game should be sensational. The electric Jaylen Waddle scored on a 63-yard punt return against Louisiana and Josh Jacobs displayed his versatility scoring on a 77-yard kickoff return against Louisville.A more challenging second-half schedule awaits the Tide. LSU, Miss. State and Auburn fill the November slate and a potential rematch with Georgia looms in December. If Alabama can keep key players healthy and develop more defensive depth, the Tide will secure its customary spot in the College Football Playoffs.22 November 2018 256magazine.comBRETT BEAIRD Brettbeaird.beaird@gmail.com • Co-host of the Boomo Bugg ShowWYTK 93.9 FM The Score • Weekdays 12:00 - 2:00 pm CT(256) 651-6588 • twitter - @brettbeairdStaff writer - Al.com/Huntsville Times, 256 Magazine256 SPORTSThe defense is one of the best in the SEC, special teams have improved, but the offense doesn’t have an identity. In a nutshell, that’s how to describe Auburn football at midseason. The Auburn offense struggled through five games and had regressed since the 22-21 loss to LSU. The offensive line gets the majority of the criticism, but Auburn Coach Gus Malzahn may need to look at changing the offensive scheme to fit the personnel. Let’s examine the positives and negatives of the first half of the 2018 season. What’s the offensive identity - During Malzahn’s tenure, Auburn has experienced its greatest success when it ‘runs downhill.’ In 2013, the Tigers led the nation in rushing with 328 yards per game and advanced to the BSC National Championship Game. The Tigers finished sixth nationally in 2016 (271 yards per game), 26th last year with 217 ypg, but only average 178 ypg this season (64th nationally). Entering this season, Auburn and Boise State were the only two teams in college football with 1,000 yard running backs for nine consecutive seasons. This season Auburn is not a power running team. The Tigers haven’t recruited enough offensive lineman (only 12 in the past four years) and big, powerful backs the past two seasons to effectively run between the tackles. Kam Martin, JaTarvious Whitlow, Asa Martin and Malik Miller either don’t have the experience or size to be productive. For the first time since 2012, Auburn failed to run for more than 100 yards in consecutive games against Arkansas and Southern Miss. Malzahn, who typically runs a fast-paced rhythm offense, needs to throw to set up the run.The offensive line has struggled - In the 34-3 win against Arkansas, the line allowed nine negative plays and a season-high four sacks while only gaining 91 yards rushing. Centers Kaleb Kim and Nick Brahms have struggled with penalties and right tackle Jack Driscoll and left tackle Prince Tega Wanogho sustained injuries against Southern Miss. The inconsistent line play has resulted in quarterback AUBURN FOOTBALLAuburn Football at Mid-Season: Tigers Winning Ugly Jarrett Stidham repeatedly missing open receivers because he’s constantly flushed out of the pocket. Stidham improved against Southern Miss completing 19 of 33 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns to Seth Williams and Anthony Schwartz. The defense is still elite - Coordinator Kevin Steele continues to get the most out of his defense (No. 3 nationally in scoring defense at 12.6 ppg) led by the best linebacker corp in the SEC. Deshaun Davis leads the Tigers with 43 tackles including seven tackles for loss and Darrell Williams has added 29 tackles with 4.5 tfls. Steele made forcing more turnovers a priority in the preseason and the Tigers have nine already after finishing last season ranked 60th with only 19 takeaways. Still, even a defense as stout as Auburn’s will eventually wear down if the offense doesn’t pick up the slack.Special teams have improved - Jordyn Peters from Muscle Shoals has become the designated punt blocker after partially blocking two punts this season. Ryan Davis is one of the best punt returners in the SEC averaging 14 yards per punt return through five games. Noah Igbinoghene scored on a 96-yard kickoff return against Arkansas. Arryn Siposs has averaged 45 yards on 22 punts. Anders Carlson has made 6 of 12 fields and 16 of 16 extra points. After playing four home games the first half of the season, Auburn’s second-half schedule is brutal with tough road games at Miss. State, Ole Miss, Georgia and Alabama. Auburn’s defense and improved special teams will keep the Tigers in every game. The offense has issues only recruiting and time will change.SEC West FootballLocal College Football256 SPORTSUNAALABAMA A&MShorterNorth Greenville11/311/10@University of Arkansas - Pine BluffGrambling State University@Mississippi Valley State11/311/1011/17LSUTEXAS A&MARKANSASOLE MISSALABAMAAUBURNMISSISSIPPI STATETENNESSEETexas A&M@GeorgiaLiberty@Alabama11/311/1011/1711/24Lousisian Tech@AlabamaArkansas@Ole Miss11/311/1011/1711/22CharlotteKentuckyMissouri@Vanderbilt11/311/1011/1711/24@LSUMississippi StateThe CitadelAuburn11/311/1011/1711/24South Carolina@Texas A&M@VanderbiltMississippi State11/311/1011/1711/22Alabama@ArkansasRice@Texas A&M11/311/1011/1711/24@AuburnOle MissUABLSU11/311/1011/1711/24LSU@Mississippi State@Missouri11/1011/1711/23256magazine.com November 2018 2324 November 2018 256magazine.comGuntersville resident, Justin Lucas, has won the 2018 Bassmaster Elite Series Angler of the Year title. The California native turned Alabama resident took home the $100,000 prize recently at Lake Chatuge. The Angler of the Year title goes to the angler who accumulates the most points throughout the season based on the place of finish at each event.Lucas recently clinched the title by finishing in 7th place at the Angler of the Year championship tournament at Lake Chatuge in north Georgia. Lucas entered the event with a 9-point lead in the standings over Arizona angler Josh Bertrand. “I wanted this so badly,” Lucas said. “The build-up to this tournament affected every part of my life. I haven’t been sleeping because I would wake up in the middle of the night thinking about my game plan for this week. I’ve told my family and friends just to bear with me for a few more days, and everything would be okay – and now it’s all good.”“You think about the guys who’ve won this title, like Kevin Van Dam and Gerald Swindle – it’s unbelievable,” Lucas said. “I’m the 23rd guy who’s ever won this in the 50-year history of B.A.S.S. and that’s humbling.” The Angler of the Year title is the biggest accomplishment of his young career along with Elite Series wins at the California Delta and Potomac River. The top 35 anglers in the final Angler of the Year standings all qualified for the 2019 Bassmaster Classic being held next March in Knoxville, Tennessee on the Tennessee River. Other Alabama residents who finished in the top 35 were Aaron Martens, Mark Daniels Jr. and Jesse Wiggins. The bride’s uncle was the officiant. The colors were quartz and pewter. The wedding was short and sweet. The bridal party walked down the aisle to Boyz II Men “I do” and the Bride walked down the aisle to “Another You” by Brian McKnight. We exchanged vows, prayed together, and had a sand ceremony which included orange sand for Le’von (Tennessee) and red sand for Sylyndar (University of Alabama). As a joke at the end of the ceremony the officiant announced the couple as Mr. and Mrs. Owens (The bride’s maiden name). THE RECEPTION?After the wedding the guests enjoyed a cocktail hour while the wedding party finished taking pictures. At the start of the reception the bridal party was announced and when it was time for the Bride and Groom to be announced “Yea Alabama” played for a second as a joke (since Le’Von is a TN fan and wasn’t any help with selecting the music). We then danced to Major’s “Why I love you.” Afterwards there was a Bride/Father dance and Groom/Mother dance. Dinner followed the dances and a champagne toast from one of the best men and the matron of honor. The remainder of the evening was filled with a traditional bouquet and garter toss, dancing, drinks, and photo booth fun for the guests. AND YOUR HONEYMOON?
